Scion Teams Up With Underground Musicians

Since the inception of Scion in 2003, the company has supported up and coming bands, particularly of the extreme metal genre. Scion's A/V project, as it's called, "provides a platform for passionate artists to focus on developing their art and exploring endless possibilities."1. This idea aligns with their overarching goal of pushing the boundaries of creativity and design, offering non-traditional concepts and marketing strategies that appeals to younger audiences and artists alike.
When most people think of Scion, they probably think of uniquely styled cars like the Scion xB. But, for bands like the Seattle-based metal group, The Melvins, Scion is more than just an edgy automaker. As a matter of fact, Scion recently inked a deal with The Melvins to fund one of their to-be-released music videos, while giving them all creative control.
While it might seem against the philosophies of underground music to accept funding from a large corporation, Scion allows the artists to keep all the rights to their creations, something unusual in the music world. Explaining why they're excited to be a part of the deal, Dale Crover, drummer for The Melvins says, "I am really glad that a company like this is interested in art. It's a way to continue doing what we do and make money doing it."2
The Melvins are not the first band sponsored by Scion. D.J. Dâm-Funk, Singapore grindcore band Wormrot, and Norwegian metal band, Enslaved, are among some of the artists supported by Scion's A/V project. Their commitment "to build good through many small actions rather than a few large ones,"3 means they can afford to support artists that other, major corporations might see as unmarketable. Even more than that, according to Scion Senior Vice President, Jack Hollis, for the automaker, it's never been about turning a profit. They will continue to support those who push the creative envelope, regardless of the return on their investment.
